Brownfield Redevelopment

"The impact of brownfields is not just on that one parcel of land, but on the surrounding neighborhoods as well. These sites need to be cleaned up, redeveloped and put back into productive use. We need to make our neighborhoods healthy and vibrant where jobs are located in the communities where people live.”

Harvey Johnson
Mayor of Jackson, MS
Co-Chair, Brownfields Task Force, US Conference of Mayors

The term “brownfield” describes an abandoned or underutilized property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. This can apply to a variety of sites, including but not limited to: industrial properties, old gas stations, warehouses, or even residential buildings which could contain lead paint and asbestos. They represent pockets of disinvestment, neglect, and ultimately, missed opportunities. Many times these brownfield sites are found in communities and neighborhoods in need of economic investment and job creation.

Elan Planning, Design & Landscape Architecture has completed brownfield redevelopment master plans and urban infill projects. We understand the nuances in the planning process of brownfield redevelopment. Other specific tasks provided by Elan’s team  are Strategic Planning, Market Positioning, Market & Feasibility Analyses, Visioning for Communities & Organizations, and Environmental Assessments & Investigations.
